The link between adoption and ADHD is both significant and often overlooked. While ADHD affects around 9–11% of children in the general population, studies suggest that 20–30% of adoptees meet the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis.
Why might this be?
Possible contributing factors:
Stress during pregnancy
If a birth mother experiences high stress during pregnancy, the developing baby may be affected, particularly in terms of brain development and nervous system regulation.
Separation at birth
Early separation from the birth mother can impact a baby’s developing brain and influence neurotransmitter function, which plays a role in attention, regulation, and emotional development.
Common challenges adoptees with ADHD may face:
Low self-esteem
Feelings of rejection or abandonment may deeply affect emotional wellbeing. ADHD traits like poor working memory or impulsivity can compound this, leading to increased frustration and self-criticism.
Struggles with identity and belonging
Many adoptees grapple with the question, “Who am I?” ADHD can add another layer, particularly with traits like Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD), emotional dysregulation, and difficulty with social cues.
How I support adopted women with ADHD:
I acknowledge the complexity
Adoption and ADHD each bring challenges, and together, they can deeply shape how someone experiences the world. I hold space for open, honest dialogue.
I offer clarity and understanding
I help clients understand how ADHD affects the brain and how it interacts with adoption-related experiences like identity exploration or emotional sensitivity.
I share strategies and support
Coaching is practical and strengths-based. We work together on tools that support executive function, emotional regulation, and self-trust, without shame or pressure to “fix” yourself.
If you’re an adopted woman with a late or self-diagnosed experience of ADHD, coaching can offer you a space to explore, understand, and move forward, with more clarity, calm, and confidence.
